Reed Tools Used at GoBassoon
I have had many people curious about what type of tools I use for various stages of making a reed. Just like different brands of bassoons, there are many brands of tools that are high quality. I am not saying that the brands/tools I use are better than others overall, just better for my individual setup and process.
Dial Indicator/Micrometer: Accurate (inches not metric)
Files - Jeweler's diamond coated files (I have fine and very fine in the flat shape)
Glue - Duco
Gouger - Rieger
Hardness Tester/Density Guage - Rolf Potratz
Knife - Rigotti, Double hollow ground, long blade
Mandrel, Forming - Bassoon: Tips copied from a Van Hoesen forming mandrel | Contrabassoon: Rieger
Mandrel, Holding - Bassoon: Fox | Contrabassoon: Rieger
Plaque - Fox bassoon and contrabassoon
Profiler - Rieger
Reamer - Bassoon: Very old Popkin reamer | Contrabassoon: Rieger (both fluted and diamond coated)
Pre-Gouger - Reeds n Stuff
Shaper - Bassoon: Rieger 1A | Contrabassoon: K1
Splitter - Rieger
Tip Cutter - Rieger guillotine
Tip Profiler - Rieger
Wrap - Knit Cro Sheen or other size 10 crochet thread
All other tools I have picked up from various hardware stores.
